Jean-Jaques Burnel
Bass Player & founder member - The Stranglers
Jean-Jacques Burnel, born in 1952 in London to French parents, is best known as the powerful, melodic bassist for the British rock band The Stranglers. A classically trained guitarist who shifted to bass, Burnel developed one of the most recognizable tones in punk and post-punk music—aggressive, driving, and unmistakably melodic. His use of overdriven amps and precision picking helped shape the band’s dark, distinctive sound.
Beyond his musical contributions, Burnel is also a skilled martial artist, holding high ranks in karate, which has influenced both his discipline and stage presence. As a vocalist, he provided some of The Stranglers’ most memorable performances, including lead vocals on “La Folie” and “Nice ’n’ Sleazy.”
Throughout decades of touring and recording, Burnel has remained the band’s sonic anchor and creative force, contributing significantly to their evolution from punk origins to more experimental, genre-spanning work.
