Dave Pegg

Bass Player

Dave Pegg (born 2 November 1947 in Acocks Green, Birmingham) is a renowned English bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer, best known for his long-standing roles in the British folk-rock band Fairport Convention and the progressive rock band Jethro Tull. Peggy began his musical journey in the 1960s, initially playing guitar in local Birmingham bands. He transitioned to bass guitar and joined several groups, including The Uglys and The Exception. In 1967, he became a member of the Ian Campbell Folk Group, where he developed a deep appreciation for folk music and honed his skills on the mandolin and upright bass. This period also connected him with future Fairport Convention member Dave Swarbrick. In late 1969, Pegg joined Fairport Convention, replacing bassist Ashley Hutchings. His first album with the band was Full House (1970), which showcased his dynamic bass playing and contributed to the band's evolving sound. Over the years, Pegg became a central figure in the group, contributing to numerous albums and helping to steer the band's direction through various lineup changes. In 1979, Pegg joined Jethro Tull, stepping in for the late John Glascock. His tenure with the band spanned over 15 years, during which he contributed to several albums, including A (1980), Broadsword and the Beast (1982), and Crest of a Knave (1987). Balancing commitments with both Jethro Tull and Fairport Convention, Pegg eventually left Jethro Tull in 1995 to focus solely on Fairport and other projects. In addition to his work with Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull, Pegg has been involved in various musical endeavors. He formed The Dylan Project, a tribute band dedicated to Bob Dylan's music, and collaborated with guitarist PJ Wright in the duo Peggy & PJ. Pegg has also released solo albums, including The Cocktail Cowboy Goes It Alone (1983) and Birthday Party (1998). Peggy has been close friends with KSM's Paul Mitchell since 1981 and has contributed to a number of our productions.
