Alan Thomson is a highly respected Scottish bassist and songwriter, born in Glasgow in 1960. Initially a guitarist, he switched to fretless bass and gained prominence touring and recording with folk legend John Martyn, maintaining this close musical partnership for nearly thirty years. Thomson’s dynamic range as a musician is evident in his collaborations with artists such as Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Robert Palmer (co-writing the B-side of “Addicted to Love”), Rick Wakeman, Andy Summers, Julia Fordham, and Denny Laine. His versatility spans rock, folk, and jazz, and he is a key member of Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle and the John Jorgenson Electric Band. Thomson is celebrated for his expressive touch, technical skill, and adaptability across genres.
